The training method:
A clicker is a small box containing a metal plate. When you press it, a metallic click is heard. Clicker training is a method of training in which the animal learns to associate its own behavior with an event in the environment. In practice, it means that when the animal shows desired behavior, this is rewarded by the owner. The animal will want to show the desired behavior more often, because it gives him something positive. Undesirable behavior yields no results and is not punished. This makes this method of training very animal-friendly. To give an example of how this way of learning works: for example, if a dog knocks over a trash can once (own behavior) and then finds food (positive consequence), he will show this behavior more often. On the other hand, if he does this several times without food being available (no reward for the behavior), this behavior will disappear over time.
Teach:
Clicker training is mainly used to learn something. When the animal understands the exercise well and performs it properly, clicking is reduced. With this method, new commands can not only be learned, but unwanted behavior (such as pulling on the leash, lunging at other dogs, etc.) can also be tackled. Originally, clicker training was mainly applied to dolphins and wild animals. Nowadays it is a widely used method to train dogs as well. There are even owners who use the clicker to train cats, rabbits, birds, etc.
Benefits of using a clicker:
The clicker always produces the same sound ('click'), this is a very clear signal for the dog, often clearer than a word or sound you make yourself. One of the main advantages of using a clicker is that you can time accurately to the second. With a click you can reward this behavior exactly when the dog shows the desired behavior. With training methods that only use food as a reward, for example, you are often too late and you unintentionally reward behavior other than what you want to see from the dog.
Click sound:
Some dogs are initially a bit reluctant or even afraid of the sound, but this can often be quickly remedied by muting the sound (by holding the clicker behind your back) or by using a clicker with which you can produce a slightly softer sound . It is often said that the clicker is not suitable for classroom training, because dogs will then respond to the clickers of other owners. In that case, a clicker with different tones can be used. In practice, however, we see that this problem hardly occurs when training is done with attention.
Clicker training in practice:
First of all, the dog must learn that a click is a predictor of a reward. This is learned by clicking and immediately giving the dog a training snack or food. When the dog understands this, you can continue with teaching certain exercises. In the beginning there is a click (and therefore feeding) for every good 'start' to the exercise. The dog can be stimulated to make this 'initiation' by means of gestures. In some cases, we simply wait until the dog spontaneously makes a move. As an example: if you want to teach the dog to stand up from a sitting position, click (and feed) in the beginning to minimally lift the hindquarters. After a number of repetitions, you delay the click a little longer in order to ask the dog for more and more of the desired exercise. You continue in this way until the dog masters the exercise perfectly. Only then is a command linked to the exercise. When the entire exercise is performed correctly on command, the clicking is reduced. In this way, the dog will also think for itself and look for what is asked of him. For owners who use clicker training more often, a short game is sometimes given as a reward instead of food.
In short, clickter training is not only a very effective, but above all a very fun way of training and working with your four-legged friend!
